Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Racine just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area frequently to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have built up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Racine will most likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At Keystone Heating & Air Conditioning Co., Inc in Racine, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
