January 05, 2016

When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, a lot of them can be traced back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
